Abstract
  • My project focused on developing a therapy program consistent with the needs of the Plain Community for the Community Health Clinic (CHC) and gaining a more in-depth knowledge of rural healthcare. Over the course of the project, I gained experience in working with members of the Plain Community through observation of healthcare providers, designed and presented a therapy proposal for key stakeholders, and shared educational resources for both practitioners and caregivers. The goal of my project was to lay the foundation for a therapy program at the CHC and to gain more knowledge of serving as a healthcare provider in a rural area. My partnered site was the CHC, which is in Topeka, Indiana. The outcomes of my project include gaining an in-depth knowledge of health care in the Plain Community, presenting a proposal for therapy services to key stakeholders, and gaining an opportunity to continue serving the Plain Community as an occupational therapist after my project ends. Key deliverables include written analyses from rural healthcare providers, an outlined proposal for therapy services, a grant for therapy equipment, and educational pamphlets for providers and caregivers. My project laid the foundation for a therapy program at the CHC. While the program is not currently started, it has streamlined the process for the facility. I will also apply the information I learned in my project about serving the Plain Community in my future practice as an occupational therapist.
