Abstract
  • This doctoral capstone project aimed to increase occupational therapy practitioners' competence by developing educational materials to support the nontraditional professional practice area of aquatic therapy. Although many aquatic therapy resources are available to practitioners, there has been a lack of resources specific to occupational therapy. The project's outcome measures included: (1) The student will demonstrate in-depth knowledge of aquatic therapy practice as evidenced by completing an education plan designed to support occupations performed on land following participation in an aquatic therapy program. (2) To demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of aquatic therapy from an occupational therapy perspective, the student will create a website for occupational therapy practitioners to educate on this unique practice area. The partnership site was Riverview Health Rehab & Fitness, located in Noblesville, Indiana. Project completion and outcomes included the development of 11 educational resources, education plan content, and a website centered around aquatic therapy from an occupational therapy perspective. Other critical deliverables included course certificates of completion, occupation-based case studies, and a PowerPoint presentation for OT students. The educational materials and content developed throughout this project will allow for an increase in the number of occupational therapists practicing aquatic therapy to promote optimal occupational performance among clients.
