- Abstract
Across the entire population, one in six children aged 3-17 are diagnosed with developmental disabilities, meaning around 17% of the overall childhood population has some form of disability (Center for Disease Control, 2021). Understanding this commonality, it is also important to recognize that children with developmental disabilities require unique, individualized attention from caregivers. Church is no exception to this standard of care, as most children attend church with their parents on a regular basis. However, most churches lack the time, resources, and staff to meet this essential service to their congregational members (Sargeant, 2015). Developing a special needs ministry within a church through creating sensory rooms, resource bins, staff and volunteer training, individual child profiles and classroom inclusion materials, a church can provide children with special needs and their families a safe place to actively participate in the church with full inclusion. A disability ministry is an important element to incorporate in a church, as it fosters the outreach in the community the church congregation seeks to reach, while also demonstrating God’s love to all people (Wright & Owiny, 2016).
