- Abstract
There is a high unemployment rate for individuals with Down syndrome; an approximation of employment for adults with Down syndrome is eleven percent (Kumin and Schoenbrodt, 2016). Occupational therapists are responsible for helping individuals engage in meaningful occupations, including work. Occupational therapists are qualified professionals in vocational rehabilitation as they use a holistic perspective to assess the job demands and their suitability to the client and understand the client’s work wants and needs. (World Federation of Occupational Therapy, 2012). This doctoral capstone aims to improve employment rates and independence for adults with Down syndrome in Charlotte, North Carolina, collaborating with GiGi’s Playhouse and other community businesses that hire and support individuals with disabilities. Objectives and deliverables for this doctoral capstone experience include developing an enhanced career program for adults with Down syndrome to increase future employment opportunities, developing a skills inventory and employment guidelines of essential skills for successful employment, completing continuing education courses related to facilitating positive employment outcomes, conducting assessments and interviews with community businesses, creating curriculum outcome measures to ensure program sustainability, and developing training modules for staff and volunteers on the program curriculum.
