Abstract
  • The aim of this doctoral capstone concentrated on adapting and modifying sports, games, and activities for children with disabilities (CWD). These adaptations were made to increase physical activity, social inclusion, and healthy behaviors among CWD and their peers at the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) of Troy. Key goals and objectives of this doctoral capstone experience include facilitating change among the environment that promotes social inclusion, physical activity, peer interactions, nutrition education, and overall healthy behaviors at the BGC of Troy. This doctoral capstone was completed at the BGC of Troy (Troy, MI) with participation from BGC of Troy members and staff. Outcomes of this doctoral capstone experience include developing skills as a leader by incorporating evidence-based health and wellness program guides to promote physical activity and nutrition education. Additionally, designing an education resource to increase staff competence when working with CWD that includes adaptations and modifications in activities to promote health and wellness. Key deliverables include CEU course certificate of completion, documentation of teaching with BGC of Troy staff, development of an educational resource tool, completion of SWOT analysis and sustainability report, completion of an activity analysis, and development of a resource guide. Overall, the findings indicated the need for staff training and education to better prepare for working with CWD. CWD should have access to the same activities and experiences as their peers. Reducing barriers for CWD can result in dramatic changes in play and social participation, while also promoting healthy behaviors that can last a lifetime.
