  • The focus of the doctoral capstone project was to gain experience and knowledge in the area of sleep within OT practice, to establish program development, advocacy, and evidence-based education for the older adult population in an outpatient facility. Objectives include completion of two CEUs, synthesis of evidence-based resources for the development of a series of leaflets, observation with a sleep specialist, designed case studies, staff education, and evidence-based educational tools for clients. Partnership sites include Community Stroke and Rehabilitation Center and Colorado State University-Center for Community Partnerships. Outcomes encapsulate an in-depth knowledge of how to develop an occupational therapy sleep program for the older adult population at the respective facility and the provision of client education to increase awareness and positive culture toward sleep efficiency. Deliverables include an outline of the developed program, CEU course certificates of completion, daily analysis of experience with implications from observation with a sleep specialist, designed case studies, guideline resource for staff, marketing materials, and evidence-based educational materials. Poor sleep is an issue in need of attention; however, awareness of OT's contributions in this area and measures that can be taken to address sleep challenges are lacking. Project completion has resulted in client education in one-to-one and group formats outlining best practice recommendations for engagement in rest and sleep, the development of an evidence-based program that can be utilized for clients now and in the future, and increased confidence among health care staff in providing sleep education to clients within the respective facility.
