Abstract
  • I completed my doctoral capstone experience with the Illinois Occupational Therapy Association. My project aimed to introduce occupational therapy as a career path to students of all ages and diverse backgrounds. This capstone project focuses on developing educational resources to support the Illinois Occupational Therapy Association’s Pre-OT Mentorship Program. The development of resources integrates current research, initiatives, and advocacy resources to further recruit and retain students from diverse backgrounds. This project aims to provide the modules and educational materials to students to make an informed decision to choose occupational therapy as a career path. The outcomes of my project were understanding the role of an educator through the creation of a curriculum, increased knowledge in curriculum development, increased knowledge of leadership qualities, increased knowledge of leadership principles, developed knowledge of advocacy efforts, and presented information about diversity, equity, and inclusion to students. The deliverables I completed included a curriculum resource outline, a qualitative survey, education modules, continuing education courses, leadership resources, and an in-service presentation. The educational modules included foundational information about the field of occupational therapy. They will be available as a free resource for students interested in pursuing occupational therapy as a career path. The resources will improve accessibility to the field of occupational therapy for students of diverse backgrounds and provide support during the application process.
