Abstract
  • As occupational therapy students, we learn about all aspects of health, how these can impact a person’s ability to complete their daily occupations, and how conversely, the ability to complete daily occupations can impact their health and wellness. Occupation-Focused Health Promotion for Project SEARCH Interns is a doctoral capstone project focused on quality improvement of the current Project SEARCH health and wellness curriculum. It focused on creating and sending out a questionnaire for Project SEARCH instructors in the United States to complete. The questionnaire had a 36% response rate that provided information to the doctoral capstone student on the opportunity for growth within the current health and wellness curriculum. The outcome of the project included bringing an emotions and coping strategy lesson to Project SEARCH, in addition to the creation and compilation of supporting documents. To ensure the lesson plan is on track to be implemented in Project SEARCH classrooms internationally for the 2023 school year, the doctoral capstone student created an action plan for the organization to follow to ensure timelines are met. The implications of this doctoral project include providing effective coping strategies to approximately 6,000 Project SEARCH interns annually. These coping strategies and additional knowledge on emotions help to create a strong foundation for emotional regulation and coping in the workplace and to set Project SEARCH interns up for success as they enter the workforce upon graduation.
