- Abstract
- The purpose of this doctoral capstone project was to increase the project leader’s clinical skills in the three clinical settings in which Army OTs primarily practice – upper extremity/hands, human performance optimization, and behavioral health. The secondary purpose of this project was to educate OTD students on the role of OT within the Army. This project’s outcome measures included: (1) The student will create a compilation of evidence-based resources supporting the need identified by the health care team on base with digital access. (2) The student will teach doctoral occupational therapy students on the role of an OT within the U.S. Army through a formal presentation with a completed analysis of effective teaching via survey. Capstone project completion and outcomes included the creation of an evidence-based orthosis manual, the completion of five CEUs with a transcript, the creation of two clinical case studies, a formal presentation to OTD students with a pre/post-survey, a survey data analytics report, and a lesson plan with accompanying activities. The partnership site for this project was Blanchfield Army Community Hospital located on Fort Campbell’s base in Kentucky. Through this capstone the project manager gained clinical experience in all three clinical settings in which Army OTs primarily function, created a 90+ page evidence-based resource for Army OTs to be distributed across the country, and educated a cohort of OTD students on the role of OT in the Army.
