- Abstract
The purpose of this project was to successfully provide community education and advocacy about dementia, and in turn create a supportive environment in which people with dementia and their families can thrive. The project’s outcome measures included: (1) The student will demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the needs of individuals with dementia in Jay County, as evidenced by an evaluation of the gap in services currently provided. (2) The student will provide information sessions to community businesses and individuals to educate about dementia and how people with dementia can be supported. (3) The student will demonstrate leadership through organizing and providing at least one community activity to promote social engagement for individuals with dementia and their families. Project partners were Lifestream Services Inc. as well as Dementia Friends Indiana. Throughout the capstone experience, the needs of the community population were considered, information workshops were held in which 75 people received certification as a Dementia Friend, and a community event was held to advocate for the Dementia Friends initiative. A few key deliverables included: Interview transcripts from discussion with a dementia caregiver, an excel document listing businesses in the community that were contacted about the initiative, photographs from information sessions, a certification of completion for Dementia Friends training, and marketing materials to advertise the community activity. Sustainability of the Dementia Friendly Community initiative may help to reduce the stigma surrounding dementia and allow for an increased quality of life for people living with dementia and their caregivers in the community.
